In addition to running two extracts from Michael Gawenda’s biography of senior partner Mark Leibler, a feature in this week’s AJN includes interviews with both Michael and Mark on the benefits and challenges of producing an unauthorised biography.
Michael tells journalist Peter Kohn that when the opportunity presented itself to profile Mark he simply couldn’t resist, though he would not have undertaken the project without access to him nor without editorial independence. “Mark stuck to that agreement, though it would be fair to say he had some issues with some of my judgments.”
For Mark’s part, he admits to the AJN that he had been reluctant at first, but had ultimately agreed to the terms negotiated by his son, Jeremy Leibler. He now feels that an authorised biography “would not have been as good a book … it’s better to have someone look at your life objectively.”
