AWN hosts Pathways to Politics at MPavilion: Changing the Face of Politics

060 6th Feb 24 v2

The first event of the year for Arnold Bloch Leibler’s women’s network saw clients and colleagues gather at MPavilion for an insightful discussion on the changing face of politics with a panel of insiders.

Moderated by commercial partner Rebecca Zwier, our special guest panellists were:

  • Sarah Buckley, CEO of Trawalla Foundation and National Co-Convenor of the Pathways to Politics for Women program
  • Dr Katie Allen, Liberal candidate for Higgins, and
  • Tina Samardzija, Senior Economic Policy Adviser at Industry Super Australia and former Mayor of the City of Monash.

Sarah spoke about the impact of the Pathways to Politics program in boosting female involvement and leadership across every level of government. Both Katie and Tina are alumni of the program, which Arnold Bloch Leibler supports by providing legal advice and seminars on legal issues relevant to a career in politics.

Tina outlined how her decision to enter politics after practicing as a lawyer and an economist was inspired by her realisation of the importance of community services when she became a mother for the first time.

Katie’s decision to enter politics was also born from a desire to serve her community and her country. Having spent many years working as a paediatrician, Katie said that a career in politics required many of the same skills - integrity, the patience to bring people along with you and asking for help when needed.

All three panellists agreed how important it is to recognise and seize opportunities when they present themselves, to learn from failure and the benefits of having a supportive family.

Pathways to Politics for Women is increasing the number of women in Australian politics by equipping diverse women to boldly embrace their political ambitions, thrive as leaders and make a profound contribution to society.

Applications for 2024 will open across Australia in early March. Women can register their interest here.
