Arnold Bloch Leibler Eileen Liu recognised as a rising star in Australian tax law article

Eileen has been announced as a finalist in the tax category of this year’s hotly contested Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Awards.

30 Under 30 seeks to promote and celebrate the excellence of up-and-coming members of the profession, with 286 young lawyers across a broad range of firms, organisations and industries having made the 2025 finalist list.

Eileen said she had always considered 30 Under 30 “the pinnacle of awards for early career lawyers”. Making the finals would allow her to inspire law students and up-and-coming lawyers in the same way that previous winners and nominees inspired her.

In her nomination, Eileen said that having joined Arnold Bloch Leibler’s renowned tax practice five years ago as a graduate, she has had the opportunity to work on diverse, complex and high-profile matters, earning the trust of partners to run point on key matters, and represent ABL at forums across Australia and internationally.

Asked to identify highlights of her time so far at ABL, Eileen described working to save the iconic Australian online bookstore, Booktopia, which entered voluntary administration earlier this year, and her involvement with the landmark case of Minerva Financial Group Pty Ltd v Commissioner of Taxation, where the unanimous decision by the Full Federal Court to allow the taxpayer’s appeal represented a significant win for our client and important guidance on the operation of Australia’s general anti-avoidance rules. Her role in spearheading the world-first Global Share Schemes Ranking Report alongside tax partner Shaun Cartoon, would also have impressed the judges. Eileen represented ABL when the report was launched mid-year in Nashville, Tennessee.

In supporting Eileen’s nomination, one of her clients, Lisa De Permentier, Executive Reward & People Analytics Lead at AGL, described Eileen as “being able to communicate complex legal concepts in a way non-lawyers can understand, and always bringing great human warmth to her presentations, as well as clear technical excellence.”

Award winners over 30 categories of law will be announced in March 2025 at a gala dinner in Sydney.
