Access ABL: Property and Development team interview with Gia Cari and Dylan Feltham

Property & Development
240423 ABL Podcast LOWRES AF 148

In this episode of Access ABL, hosts Craig Evans and Natalie Ryan sit down with partner Gia Cari and lawyer Dylan Feltham from our Property and Development team to discuss the dynamic and multifaceted practice of property law.

Gia offers an overview of the practice, highlighting the tangible and varied nature of property law. "The day-to-day practice of property law is quite different from the legal theory," she explains. "You’re dealing with real estate and things that you can see and feel and understand, but often apply in complicated issues around the possessory rights and whether or not the transaction will eventuate in the way that one party wants it to".

Dylan, who joined ABL as a graduate in 2023, shares his experience working across different areas within the Property team. He notes, "It's certainly very broad work that you do as a graduate and not siloed at all, and that extends to the different partners in the team. You get to pick and choose the good things from their practice that you want to implement into your own as a junior lawyer".

The episode also explores the collaborative nature of the Property team at ABL, which frequently works with other departments on various matters. Gia emphasises, "Our property practice is called the engine room for a reason, because we often work with other parts of the firm. Whether it be funding requirements with the banking and finance team, or commercial aspects in relation to unit sales, there’s a lot of synergies with the balance of the firm in terms of the day-to-day work".

Dylan highlights the importance of mentorship, stating, "The partners let you do as much as you're comfortable with. If you're ambitious and want to learn quickly, the partners give you the opportunity to do that. They have a vested interest in seeing you succeed".

"At ABL, the property practice is called the engine room for a really good reason."
