About Matthew

Matthew Davies is a senior associate in the firm’s property & development practice. He advises on a broad range of real estate matters including developments, acquisitions, disposals and construction transactions.

An excellent listener with a commercial mindset, he prides himself on understanding and achieving his client's key commercial and strategic goals, and being an advisor clients thoroughly enjoy working with. Matthew has acted for many of Australia's leading corporations, private client groups and entrepreneurs. 

Matthew joined the firm in 2015 and was admitted to practice in 2016. At the end of 2018, Matthew relocated to the Netherlands and worked as Senior Legal Counsel - Real Estate at The Student Hotel in their Amsterdam Headquarters. Matthew returned to the firm as a senior associate in January 2022. In September 2023, Matthew relocated to ABL’s Sydney office, to oversee and lead the reestablishment of the firm’s property & development practice in Sydney.

Practice focus

Matthew's practice focuses on the following areas:

  • development and construction projects, including commercial, industrial, retail, residential and mixed-use properties
  • sales and acquisitions, including commercial, industrial, retail, residential and mixed-use properties
  • property investments and joint ventures
  • commercial and industrial leasing transactions, and
  • property and project finance due diligence.

Matthew has acted for a number of major corporations, private client groups and entrepreneurs, including:

Commercial projects

  • AsheMorgan: in relation to the acquisition of 60 Margaret Street and the MetCentre, Sydney NSW.
  • Barwon Investment Partners: in relation to the financing of the redevelopment of the La Trobe Private Hospital.
  • Charter Hall: in relation to its acquisition of the freehold interest in Collins Place, the world-class office, entertainment and hotel precinct in Melbourne’s CBD.
  • Icon Developments Australia: in relation to various Melbourne developments, including 600 Church Street, Cremorne, and 116 – 130 Cremorne Street, Cremorne in joint venture with Zagame.
  • Impact Investment Group: in relation to the development of 54 Wellington Street, Collingwood VIC, and 25 King Street, Bowen Hills QLD.
  • Salta Properties: in relation to the acquisition and development of 475 Church Street, Richmond VIC in joint venture with Zagame.
  • Stamford Capital: in relation to the development and sale of multiple Tesla sites in various Australian jurisdictions.

Residential & mixed-use projects

  • Aspial - World Class Land: in relation to the ‘Australia 108’ residential apartment tower, Southbank, Melbourne.
  • GurnerTM: in relation to its acquisition of a Burleigh Heads, QLD residential development site in joint venture with MaxCap Group.
  • Metro Property: in relation to its Bingara Gorge development.
  • Moremac Property Group: in relation to the acquisition of 45 Gellies Road and 170 Lancefield Road, Sunbury VIC (Kingsfield, Sunbury).

Industrial projects

  • Charter Hall Group: in relation to various acquisitions, disposals, developments and leasing of industrial properties throughout Australia.
  • HB+B: in relation to various industrial developments throughout New South Wales and Victoria.
  • Honda Australia: in relation to the sale of its head office and warehouse sites in Tullamarine and Campbellfield.

Public interest & social impact

  • Australian Conservation Foundation: in relation to various leasing matters.
  • Lowitja Institute: in relation to its Collingwood head office lease.
  • Trust for Nature: in relation to the first land handback to Bunurong Traditional Owners in 180 years at Rhyll, Millowl (Phillip Island).
