About Freeman

Freeman Zhong is a senior associate in our Dispute Resolution & Litigation practice in Melbourne.

Freeman has experience in shareholder disputes, insolvency matters (acting for a range of stakeholders including creditors and insolvency practitioners), regulatory investigations, building and construction disputes and general commercial litigation.

Freeman joined the firm in 2019 and was admitted to practice in 2020. Freeman holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University with first class honours and was an Editor of the Monash University Law Review.

Dispute resolution and litigation

  • Slea Pty Ltd: a founding shareholder in Connective, an Australian mortgage aggregator, in proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Victorian Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia involving claims for oppression, breach of directors’ duties, and other breaches of the Corporations Act
  • ARA Asset Management: in relation to its shareholding in Cromwell Property Group, a listed Australian property investor and fund manager, in proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and Federal Court of Australia
  • a multinational engineering and technical services company: in relation to a dispute arising from a major energy project
  • various companies and high net worth individuals: in relation to contractual and trade practices disputes

Restructuring & insolvency

  • the Voluntary Administrators of the PAS Group Limited: in relation to the administration of a major ASX-listed retailer, including proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia
  • the Liquidators of Legend International Holdings: in relation to proceedings in the Victorian Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia involving voidable and uncommercial transactions
  • various property developers: in relation to the insolvency of Probuild Constructions
  • OneVue Holdings: in relation to disputes between creditors of the collapsed Sargon Group in the Federal Court of Australia

Building and construction disputes

  • The State of Victoria: in relation to the West Gate Tunnel Project
  • Fridcorp: in relation to the Beyond Hurstville project, including proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and New South Wales Court of Appeal
  • various property developers: in relation to disputes with builders and adjudications under the Building and Construction Industry (Security of Payment) Act 2002 (Vic) and Building and Construction Industry (Security of Payment) Act 1999 (NSW)

  • the CEO and senior executives of a major Australian retailer: in relation to an ASIC investigation and examinations regarding the marketing of a financial product
