First Australians Capital’s (FAC) vision is to change the course of economic prosperity for the First Australians by supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs, enterprises and communities to create and drive their own prosperity and pursue self-determination through economic empowerment. FAC describes its approach as investing in Indigenous economic independence by linking 60,000 plus years of Indigenous business experience with the modern marketplace.

Conceived by Jocelyn Grant and Leah Armstrong, initially as a pilot project with the support of Social Ventures Australia, Indigenous Business Australia and Reconciliation Australia, FAC’s model combines concessional capital with capability and business support.

Arnold Bloch Leibler was initially engaged to advise FAC on incorporation, charity registration and endorsement as a Deductible Gift Recipient. Since its successful endorsement as a Public Benevolent Institution, Arnold Bloch Leibler has advised FAC in relation to a wide range of legal and commercial matters including shareholders’ agreements, and privacy, data protection and credit reporting matters.

Arnold Bloch Leibler also works with FAC to find ways to provide ongoing support to related not-for-profit and for-profit Indigenous enterprises which FAC assists to establish and mentor.

“FAC’s relationship with ABL began when our founding directors had an idea to build a not-for-profit Indigenous led investment fund to provide capital to Indigenous enterprises. It was a big vision to share but Peter, Caitlin and the broader ABL team saw what we wanted to do straight away and jumped on board. From assisting with the big stuff, such as incorporation and securing PBI status, to answering mundane contract questions, they have been unflappable supporters. The FAC community is all about relationships and Peter and Caitlin are part of our family.”
