Liam Cavell

About Liam

Liam Cavell is a Senior Associate in the firm’s dispute resolution and litigation practice in Sydney.

Prior to joining Arnold Bloch Leibler, Liam was a Senior Federal Prosecutor at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. In this role, Liam prosecuted complex fraud offences committed against Commonwealth agencies. In 2017, he undertook a secondment to the Australian Electoral Commission.

Liam also previously worked at Herbert Smith Freehills in environment and planning law, and as an Associate to her Honour Judge Flannery SC in the District Court of New South Wales.

Practice focus

Liam’s practice focuses on the following areas:

  • commercial litigation and dispute resolution
  • corporate regulatory investigations and enforcement action, and
  • white collar crime.


Prior to joining the firm, Liam acted in a range of matters, including on behalf of:

White collar crime

  • the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to:
    • the hearing, sentence and appeal proceedings for the former Deputy Mayor of Auburn City Council, Salim Mehajer, in relation to electoral fraud
    • sentencing proceedings for an individual charged with attempting to obtain over $2.2 million in false tax refunds, and
    • sentencing proceedings for an individual charged with obtaining over $300,000 in false tax refunds.

Environment & planning

  • a mining company: in sentencing proceedings for an environmental offence.

Employment and work health & safety

  • a healthcare services company: in the inquests into three deaths at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.
