About Alex

Alex King is a disputes, litigation and insolvency lawyer. He has been a partner at Arnold Bloch Leibler since 2004 and has experience in advising a broad range of clients including private clients, family-based businesses, publicly listed companies, large institutions and government bodies, both in Australia and overseas.

Alex takes a business-minded approach to his advice, working closely with clients to ensure that a dispute or litigation is resolved quickly and in a way that protects their commercial interests and objectives. When a full-scale litigation is required, Alex advises clients with enthusiasm and effectiveness.

Alex was educated at Sydney and Monash Universities, completing his articles with Arnold Bloch Leibler in 1997. He was appointed a senior associate of the firm in 2000 and became a partner in 2004. Alex is also a regular presenter of papers to lawyers and non-lawyers regarding the practical application of the law in business contexts, in Australia and overseas.

Practice focus

Alex’s practice focuses on the following areas:
  • disputes and litigation arising from general commercial and contractual arrangements, in the private sector and government, in Australia and overseas, relating to:
    • financial services and regulation (including insider trading);
    • professional services (including professional negligence, particularly in financial services contexts);
    • oil and resources;
    • transport;
    • property (including valuation);
    • property development;
    • building and construction;
    • tax; accounting;
    • partnership and joint ventures; and
    • intellectual property (including confidential information);
  • corporations matters, in particular concerning shareholders’ disputes, takeovers and directors’ duties;
  • corporate recovery and insolvency; and
  • wills and estates disputes.

Directorships & memberships

In 2016, Alex was appointed as a member of the National Council of the Australian Youth Orchestra.


Alex has acted in a range of matters, including:

  • Buller Ski Lifts Limited, operator of Victoria’s Mt Buller alpine resort: in relation to land tax assessments, objections and litigation;
  • Patrick Corporation and related companies and directors: in the successful defence of Federal Court proceedings brought by various groups of non-union labourers arising out of the nationwide waterfront dispute;
  • Shamrock Holdings Inc (USA), part owners of Australian Rice Holdings: in the successful pursuit of John Elliott for monies owed to Australian Rice Holdings;
  • Incitec Limited: in relation to the defence of takeover/oppression proceedings in the Supreme Courts of Victoria and South Australia involving Futuris Corporation Limited and Orica Limited;
  • the administrators of the insolvent Ansett Group of companies;
  • the directors of Walter Construction Group Limited (in liquidation);
  • Baron Corporation, Becton Group, Buxton Group, Juilliard Group, MAB Corporation, Nexus Energy, Rathbone Wine Group and Walker Group: in general disputes and litigation matters;
  • Nufarm Limited: in arbitration with its major supplier;
  • Pitcher Partners: in defending audit-related proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria; and
  • Various aged care-related disputes and litigation.
