5 minutes with newly appointed Senior Associate Elly

Dispute Resolution & Litigation
Elly Bishop
Newly appointed Litigation Senior Associate, Elly Bishop, gives an insight into her background, key market trends and what she values about working at ABL.

What skills/experiences would you identify as adding a different dimension to your approach as a lawyer?

My experience as an Associate, both at the Federal Court and at the High Court, has been invaluable in shaping the lawyer I am today, as I had the opportunity to observe how some of the top legal minds in Australia went about their work.  Distilling a dispute down to its key issues adds both clarity and efficiency to your work and the outcomes that can be achieved.

What sort of lawyer do you want to be for your clients?

I would like my clients to consider that I am responsive and that I give clear and concise advice which is relevant to their commercial and strategic objectives.  I also endeavour to develop close and cooperative working relationships with my clients, to allow us to achieve the best results together.  As being involved in a dispute or litigation can be stressful and time consuming, I try to make my clients feel as comfortable through and with the process as possible.

Elly Bishop, Senior Associate

What would you say are some of the key market trends or developments you are seeing in your practice this year?

Case management, by both the Courts and the parties, is moving online, and it’s up to practitioners to make the most of those services to work efficiently and keep costs down. In addition, smart use of technology in litigation and dispute resolution can be of great value to clients in managing and presenting their cases in the best possible way.

What advice would you give to new lawyers?

The detail is important – do your best to be across the detail of your matters and the procedures of the Courts that you are practising in.  This will help you to anticipate next steps and keep your client’s ultimate goals in sight. Get involved and have fun!

What do you enjoy most about working at ABL?

I enjoy working on high-stakes matters with lawyers who are at the top of their game. And, of course, catching up with those lawyers for Haigh’s chocolate in the litigation break out space at lunch on Fridays.
