Celebrating 50 years
In 2003, Arnold Bloch Leibler celebrated its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, a cocktail function was held and attended by the Prime Minister, the Honourable John Howard MP, on 14 April at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.
The function was attended by foreign and local dignitaries, including Sir Zelman and Lady Cowen, members of the Judiciary, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, Attorney-General Daryl Williams, Revenue Minister Senator Helen Coonan, Leader of the Federal Opposition Simon Crean, Ambassador of Israel His Excellency Gaby Levy, Victorian Opposition Leader Robert Doyle and members of Federal and State Parliaments.
Senior Partner, Mark Leibler AC, and Managing Partner, Henry Lanzer, reflected on the firm's 50 year history and the Prime Minister, the Honourable John Howard, gave a keynote address at the event.
The firm's long-standing clients were acknowledged for their part in contributing to the firm's growth from humble beginnings and their continued loyalty across generations was noted as a distinguishing feature of the firm's client service philosophy.
At the function, Mark Leibler AC commented, "In 1953, the firm had one lawyer, one secretary and its first client had been bitten by a dog. Today, the firm has 25 partners, over 200 staff, offices in Melbourne and Sydney, and among its clients are some of the country's largest corporations and most successful entrepreneurs . . .". The Honourable John Howard congratulated the firm on its success and growth: "What the partners, the employees and the clients of Arnold Bloch Leibler are celebrating tonight is 50 years of living out what I can loosely call the Australian dream . . .". Henry Lanzer reflected on some of the firm's differentiating characteristics, noting: "Our partnership is diverse with many strong characters. In many respects, it is a microcosm of our clients – business owners who are brilliant and creative, with a keen sense of survival, a strong moral conscience . . . and a healthy dose of volatility . . .".
