| | 18 Jul | How Australia is reducing the tax bill for foreign investors This article discusses the recent Bill passed by the Australian lower House of Representatives allowing certain widely held foreign funds to use Australian fund managers without being subject to Australian tax on income that would otherwise have been outside the scope of Australian tax. Arnold Bloch Leibler’s taxation partner, Clint Harding, is quoted and highlighted the need for foreign investors to seek specialist advice due to the way in which the new rules have been drafted and, in particular, the complexities of determining whether or not an investor will qualify as an IMR foreign fund. The article also discusses the potential impact of recent changes to the withholding tax rate applying to distributions made by Australian managed investment trusts. | 2011 | | 06 Sep | PPSA commencement date deferred As mentioned in the commercial & corporate bulletin titled Has your business reviewed its terms of trade recently?, the PPSA was due to commence operation on 31 October 2011, however on 2 September an announcement was made by the Attorney General’s department to defer the commencement date. While, at this stage, no new commencement date has been set, the PPSA currently provides that the last possible commencement date is 1 February 2012.

| | 17 May | Arnold Bloch Leibler wins 'M&A Deal of the Year' Arnold Bloch Leibler was awarded 'M&A Deal of the Year' for our involvement in the Patrick takeover by Toll Holdings, at the ALB (Australasian Legal Business magazine) Deal of the Year awards dinner in Sydney on Tuesday 15 May. The firm's litigation team, led by Leon Zwier, represented Patrick over the eight month period.
