Neil Brydges

About Neil

Neil Brydges practises in the firm’s taxation group. He has a particular expertise in corporate and international taxation, including the taxation of financial instruments, trusts, Division 7A, foreign currency transactions, and GST. Neil’s practice includes both advisory and transactional work as well as taxation audits and disputes. Neil’s clients have included public and private groups and high net worth individuals.

Prior to joining Arnold Bloch Leibler in 2012, Neil was a senior associate at the specialist tax advisory firm, Greenwoods & Freehills. He has also held senior taxation, finance and operations positions at a number of Australian and international banks as well as an international resources company.

Neil holds a Juris Doctor and Master of Laws from The University of Melbourne. Neil was awarded the Dean’s prize for the top student in the Juris Doctor programme as well as seven other law prizes throughout his university career. In addition, Neil has qualifications in accountancy and finance.

Practice focus

Neil’s practice focuses on the following areas:
  • income taxation, including the taxation of financial arrangements, foreign and functional currency, capital gains tax, consolidation, capital management, mergers and acquisitions, Division 7A, trusts and stapled securities;
  • international taxation, including controlled foreign companies, treaties, thin capitalisation, withholding tax, and capital gains tax; and
  • goods and services tax, including the GST implications of mergers and acquisitions, and financial, property and cross-border transactions; and
  • the income tax and GST consequences of native title transactions.

Directorships & memberships

Neil is a Certified Tax Adviser of the Taxation Institute of Australia and an Accredited Specialist in Taxation Law with the Law Institute of Victoria. He contributes to legislative, technical and policy debate as a member of Law Institute of Victoria’s Tax & Revenue Committee and the Tax Institute’s Large Business and International and GST Technical Committees.


Neil has acted for both domestic and international clients in a wide range of taxation matters, including:

  • structuring and taxation issues around inbound and outbound investment for domestic and international companies and trusts;
  • the taxation of financial arrangements, and foreign and functional currency rules to financial transactions for domestic companies;
  • the audits of the cross-border financing arrangements of Australian companies;
  • the income tax and GST consequences of public private partnerships for both investors and financiers;
  • the GST consequences of structured and cross-border financial transactions for financial institutions;
  • GST issues around property and business sales; and
  • the income tax and GST consequences of native title transactions.
